2005 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION

 

Homer Electric Association's Scholarship Committee will award a number of $2,000 scholarships for the 2005 calendar year.  The Committee will select the winners based on the merits of the applicant. Scholarship recipients will be selected in April and recognized in May at the HEA Annual Membership Meeting.

 

Scholarship funds will be disbursed through the recipient's chosen school.  The school's financial aid office or admission=s office will be requested to administer the funds on behalf of the recipient and will be instructed to distribute funds equally between semesters.  Scholarship money may be used for registration, tuition, books, room and board.  Any funds not used by the recipient within two semesters of initial registration will revert to the HEA scholarship trust.

 

RULES OF ELIGIBILITY

 

1.      Applicants, their parents, or legal guardians must be members of Homer Electric Association.  Dependents or children of members must be less than 25 years old, must be residents of Alaska, and must be eligible for the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend.

 

2.     Applicants may be graduating seniors from a public or private secondary school within the HEA service area or any individual person residing within the HEA service area attending or planning to attend a college, trade school, apprenticeship or vocational-technical school.

 

3.      Awards are for students attending or who will attend an accredited college, trade school, apprenticeship, or vocational-technical school, and who will be enrolled in a course of study which leads to a degree or certificate.

 

4.      Applications and supportive documentation must be received no later than Tuesday, March 1, 2005 by 5:00 p.m.  Mail all materials to HEA Scholarship Committee, 3977 Lake Street, Homer, AK 99603, or deliver to any HEA office.

 

5.      Applicants must follow all instructions and submit a COMPLETE PACKET with the following items IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER, with no more and no less:

 

a.         Completed application with your signature.

b.         Completed Statement of Financial Plan.

c.         A personal data narrative not to exceed two pages, typed in 12 pt. font, (single spacing not accepted.)

Included in the narrative will be:

i.             Personal history.

ii.           A description of the applicant's involvement in club, school, community, and other activities.

iii.           A description of the applicant's career goals and how the applicant intends to achieve those goals.

iv.           An explanation of why the applicant feels he or she should be awarded the scholarship.

d.         Short essay on the benefits of being a member of the HEA Cooperative or cooperatives in general, on a separate page, not to exceed one page, typed in 12 pt. font, (single spacing not accepted).

e.          Exactly three letters of recommendation.

f.          High school transcript or, if applicable, a college transcript or trade school or vocational school progress reports, including latest GPA, if available. 

g.          A current résumé.

 

6.      Applications should not contain any additional information or pictures, and should not contain any less than the required information as stated above. Applicants will be disqualified if the above rules are not followed.
