Homer Electric Right-of-way 2006 Reclearing Project
In order to provide reliable, affordable power to its members, Homer Electric is constantly working to maintain over 2,200 miles of power lines. A well-maintained line results in fewer power outages and
when there is a problem, a clear right-of-way offers quick access for our crews to respond to the area and make repairs. This can be especially important in the winter when the temperature is well below zero. In addition, trees growing into the power line create several safety
problems and can result in fires. For all these reasons, HEA is undertaking an expanded reclearing effort this spring and summer that will greatly improve the reliability and safety of the system. A tree
clearing contractor will be working in the Soldotna, Kenai, North Kenai to Bernice Lake, and along East End Road in Homer during the next several months. The contractor will be clearing a 20-foot right-of-way along 225 miles of overhead primary power lines.
Notification
Members living in the areas where the contractor will be working will be notified by mail. If there are specific questions regarding the clearing work, members can call the contractor at 907-394-0996. The goals of the
reclearing work are to improve the system reliability and protect the power lines from danger trees. If a tree is located in the right-of-way and poses a potential threat to the line, it is our goal to remove it. We understand there are special circumstances with regards to
property and location of trees and there is a willingness on the part of the cooperative to find solutions to problems. Debris/Slash
The debris left behind after the reclearing work will be ground up by mechanical equipment into a mulch-like consistency. There will not be any large piles of tree limbs and stumps left in the right-of-way.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
Never attempt to trim or remove danger trees yourself. The result could be damage to the Co-op's facilities and you will be held responsible for any repairs. Worse, you could be injured or killed.
Never touch a tree in contact with a power line. Trees do conduct electricity and can cause serious injury or death |
