About the Cooperative
Beginnings |
In 1945, nine forward-thinking
citizens of Homer met and began working together to form Alaska's fifth rural electric
cooperative. Their first official Rural Electrification Administration (REA) meeting
was December 17, 1945, and the system was energized March 13, 1950, making Homer brighter
for 56 cooperative members. |

Member, One Vote
Homer Electric is your member-owned cooperative with offices in Homer, Alaska and Kenai, Alaska |
Homer Electric is your member-owned
cooperative. As a locally-owned cooperative, you have a voice in the operation of
Homer Electric. You have the right to run or vote for members to represent you on
the Board of Directors. All candidates must be properly nominated by a petition of
fifteen or more signatures. The voting takes place at the annual membership meeting. |
Board
Meetings |
Regular meetings are generally held the second Tuesday of
each month from January to June in the Kenai office and from July to December in
Homer. Call your local HEA office for more information. |
Annual
Meeting |
The annual meeting is held
on one of the first seven days of in May. Ballots are mailed to all members prior to the meeting. Members are encouraged to vote and attend. |
Capital
Credits |
Capital credits represent your
ownership equity in the co-op. They are based on company margins, the difference
between operating expenses and total revenue. As a member, you are entitled to a
portion of these margins based on the amount of electricity purchased for the year.
Capital Credit checks are issued at the direction of the Board
of Directors. These margins are paid in full to the estate of
deceased member upon Board approval. Each year you will receive notification of the margins assigned to
your capital credits account. It is important for HEA to have your current address
to ensure you receive this information and your refund checks. REFUNDS:
