Nikiski Cogeneration Project
The Nikiski Cogeneration Project is a partnership between HEA,
Agrium, and Alaska Electric Generation and Transmission to move the Soldotna #1 turbine
from the Soldotna location, which has been used for stand-by service, to Agriums
Nikiski plant to run full time. About 5MW of the power produced will be used by Agrium;
the remainder will be fed into the electric grid to stabilize future electric rates and
improve reliability on the entire Railbelt system.

The
new plant generates low-cost electricity and steam that is used in the
production of nitrogen-based agricultural products. All of this helps keep production
costs low and contribute to the future viability of the plant. Beginning the first year,
the project will have a positive impact for HEA members. By the end of the 13-year
contract period, it is projected that HEAs rates will be positively impacted by as
much as 6%.
We enjoy working with Agrium and welcome them as a
new member. |
