Homer Electric Provides Support to Project GRAD

Homer Electric Association, in partnership with Touchstone Energy, has provided scholarship funding to Project GRAD. Project GRAD is a new program in the Kenai Peninsula School District that is designed to provide staff development, increase graduation rates and prepare students for college. The schools targeted for the initial phase of Project GRAD include those in Nanwalek, Port Graham, Nikolaevsk, Ninilchik, Razdolna, Tyonek and Voznesenka. Touchstone Energy, a national alliance of member-owned electric cooperatives, funded the Project GRAD program with a $1,073 grant. The grant was supported with a $500 donation from Homer Electric. The funds will be used to serve a scholarship program for students that successfully complete the Project GRAD curriculum and go on to college.

Get Charged! Kits in Local Schools

Touchstone Energy’s educational curriculum, Get Charged! has been distributed to classrooms around the Kenai Peninsula.  Homer Electric has partnered with the Kenai Peninsula School District to make the kits available to all middle schools in the district. The kits, designed for Touchstone Energy by the Discovery Channel School, provide students with an understanding of electricity and the role electric cooperatives play in the distribution of electric power throughout the country.

Youth Rally

Attention high school sophomores and juniors:  Do you enjoy traveling, making new friends and learning about cooperation and teamwork?

Apply for an exciting, all expense-paid week at the Youth Rally held in Idaho during mid-July 2008. The Youth Rally is designed to give students an overview of the electric utility business while teaching leadership and team building skills. It is also an opportunity to travel, meet a diversity of students, and make lifelong friends from all over the United States.

While at the Rally, students may be selected to represent Alaska as a member of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Leadership Council. Members of the Youth Leadership Council will tour Washington, D.C., in 2008 and have other travel opportunities around the country.

To apply, you must be a high school sophomore or junior and your parent or legal guardian must be an active member receiving power from Homer Electric. Applications are available at both Homer Electric offices, at local high schools and at 2008 Youth Rally. The application deadline is April 1, 2008.
