Main Goal
If elected to a second term to serve on the Homer Electric Association Board of Directors, my goal will be to vote in favor of smart projects that will diversify our electric generation. Over 1/3 of your monthly electric bill is driven by the cost of natural gas burned to provide power. Unfortunately, this cost is increasing sharply as affordable gas in Cook Inlet decreases. It is a growing reality that Railbelt utilities will be faced with a decision on importing gas. Importing gas puts us at the whim of global markets, and we lose the energy independence we could have if we derived the majority of our power from local renewable sources backed by firm power (gas & hydro) and batteries.
If we make a rapid shift to clean energy, we can extend the life of the Cook Inlet gas supply while developing local businesses in renewable energy. While we do not have a coherent energy policy at the state level to drive investment in clean, low-cost energy sources, your HEA board did recently vote in favor of a new strategic plan that prioritizes diversification of energy sources. I will work to help make our plan a reality.
